By: Elaine Fogel
Who doesn’t like FREE stuff?
I’m always on the lookout for free marketing tools to share with small business and nonprofit readers and clients.
These ten below encompass content marketing, SEO (search engine optimization), music, writing, marketing research, direct mail marketing, animation, videos, and CRM (customer relationship management)!
1. Portent’s Content Idea Generator
When you need some quick, engaging title ideas, this app will help. All you do in this app is enter your subject word in the appropriate field and the generator displays title ideas. Here are some examples for the subject: “marketing.”

You can always use CoSchedule’s free Headline Analyzer to see how they rate.
2. Nibbler
Nibbler is a free tool for testing websites. Enter the address of any website and it will give you a report scoring the website out of 10 for key areas, including accessibility, SEO, social media, and technology. It’s completely free but is limited to three reports.
3. AudioNautix
When you need a music bed for videos, podcasts, or on-hold telephone messages, check out this site for a large variety of genres. The tunes are released under Creative Commons License 3.0, so you’re free to use the music (even for commercial purposes) if you add a link or a written credit.
4. Slick Write
If you’re responsible for writing content, you’ll want your well-written words to represent your brand. There’s no room for errors or bad grammar!
Slick Write’s application makes it easy to check your writing for grammar errors, potential stylistic mistakes, and other features.
5. Toluna QuickSurveys
It’s important to gauge your customers periodically. Toluna QuickSurveys has a free plan for those who survey their own group and use its set of standard features. You build your survey, upload your contact, and launch. Pretty simple.
6. SmartyStreets
If you’re doing direct mail marketing yourself – without an agency or mail service – you don’t want to waste your money on addresses that don’t pan out. Get 250 free lookups every month using the Single Address Validation Tool or Address Validation for Lists.
Qualifying startups can apply for one year of free, unlimited US service. “All we ask in return is that you spread the love by telling your friends about how our service has helped you.”
7. FlashVortex.com
This site offers a Flash animation tool to create banners, buttons, clocks, text, and menu options. Don’t expect sophistication, but then it’s easy to use. With free use, the company’s url appears at the bottom of every creation.
8. MakerMoon
This app allows you to create custom videos specially formatted for a Facebook cover or post, or an Instagram video.
9. GIFMaker.me
With this app, you can create animated gifs, slideshows, and video animations (with music) online freely and easily without registering. Available for Windows, Mac and Linux, the only thing you need is a Web browser with Flash player installed.
10. Capsule
With the free version of Capsule CRM, you can store and manage up to 250 contacts for up to two users with 10MB storage. Not bad for small organizations and startups.
