Face to face socializing is a thing of the past. Or is it?

Thanks to the Internet and collaboration tools, there really seems like there is no need to actually go and see people anymore. Of all the conversations that happen in the United States today, 10% of those take place on the Internet. In addition to that, 39% of people socialize more online than in person and 20% prefer digital communication over any other.

Tools like video calling and instant messaging have helped us connect with people that we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to which is especially important for business. Though initially virtual conversation is a great way to get things started, the only way to ensure and maintain a strong business relationship is with face to face meetings. In-person meetings tend to be more personal and positive and are perceived as more credible than an online conversation.

In conversation we rely very little on word choice; after all, only 7% of meaning is conveyed through words. The bulk of meaning is from inflection, the way we say words, and facial expressions, how we look when we say them. Sarcasm, anger, excitement are easy to pick up on when face to face, but through email or instant messaging it’s a whole different story. Through in person communication there is a much lower chance of misunderstanding than there is with virtual conversation.

Almost 60% of people say they are traveling less and less for business and relying more on technology for their remote business needs and meetings. Yet 84% say they still prefer in-person meetings. But traveling so far just for a meeting isn’t financially useful and just wastes money. Or does it? The ROI for a big business trip might surprise you; at every dollar spent for a business trip the company receives a value of $12.50, not to mention a strengthened business partnership.

Even finding a new job is easier with face to face communication. Most positions that are open aren’t published online, but most people waste their time perusing the internet for jobs instead of getting out there and talking to employers.
