Mobile Marketing is No Small Task
By: SmallBizClub
Mobile marketing is quickly rising to the top as a necessary way to advertise your small business. More and more consumers are relying on their phones for staying connected, purchasing products and networking less on their computers. Mobile marketing is a way for businesses to advertise via smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices.
Certain companies have already developed a successful mobile marketing campaign. The article “Six of the Best: Mobile Marketing Campaigns” looks at six different businesses that have been successful with mobile marketing. Looking at other company’s ways of doing things is a great tool to help your small business learn and grow. McDonalds, for example, launched a sweepstakes in their Italian outlets where customers could win prizes while eating inside the restaurant. It proved to be a successful campaign, as a million and a half people had participated within just five weeks.
Putting Mobile Marketing in Play
When people are on their mobile devices, most of their time is spent on apps and games. If you’re just starting out with your mobile marketing plan, consider looking to advertise on both games and apps. Look into services that place your business’s ads on the apps that your customers are using. Ads can appear as pop-ups, video ads, banner ads and more.

Let’s also not forget about SMS marketing, or text message marketing. Text messages have close to a 100 percent open rate, so it can easily be one of the most effective ways of getting your business out there. You can get customers to opt in to your text messaging services by offering a discount while they’re in the store, promoting your text campaign on social media and alerting your email subscribers to receive additional deals and promotions via text messages.
Defining the Message
Once you’ve decided to go for it, you need to create your ads and decide what message you wish to portray to customers. Keep in mind that the screens are normally significantly smaller than on a PC, so you need to get your message across clearly and quickly.
Other tips include:
- Make sure your website is mobile-friendly. Log on to your site on your phone and see how it looks. Is it loading quickly? Are the photos re-sized to fit the smaller screen? Are your ads still showing up? You’ll want to make sure your website is adaptable to mobile devices in order to most effectively market your business.
- Take a look at your audience. When using a mobile marketing strategy, it’s important to know your customers and know who you’re advertising to. If your customers are young, for example, you may want to look into advertising via Facebook and other social networking sites. If your customers are gamers or love YouTube videos, advertise on those networks. It’s all about reaching the right people in a way they are able to be reached.
- Try multiple strategies. With social media marketing, text message marketing and mobile device marketing, there is no perfect strategy. Be willing to experiment and try multiple techniques until you find a plan that works best for you and for your customers. Keep in mind that technology is constantly changing and it’s your job to be willing to adapt to meet the needs of your customers.
