Tech Trends to Watch 2017

As telecommunication service providers, TTI is intrigued by all things technology. Luckily, 2017 is a great year to be a tech geek. The tech trends this year range from advancements that have been predicted by entertainment for years, like artificial intelligence, to interesting hybrids of technology and common household goods. Here, we’ve compiled a list of the eight most exciting technology trends we’ll be seeing in the new year.

1. Voice control

Voice-controlled devices let you control your home entertainment systems with your voice. Amazon Echo was already popular over Christmas 2016, and Google Home is poised to make a huge impact this year. Where do you think innovations in this industry will head next year?

2. Artificial intelligence

OK, so robots aren’t taking over the world or gaining consciousness like they are in the new hit show Westworld. But advances in AI, especially in manufacturing, are significant. Amazon’s Kiva robots are so efficient that the company can now pack a whole order with under a minute of human labor.

3. Safe autonomous living

We’ve all seen and welcomed the invention of new technologies from the Internet of Things (IoT), ranging from a smart-connected thermostat to tech-savvy egg trays. The only problem? The state of security protecting the IoT. Will 2017 be the year that the tech industry and the government address the problem?

4. Self-driving cars

Self-driving cars are becoming a reality. Despite crashes and setbacks in 2016, will 2017 be the year that the self-driving car takes control?

5. Smart clothes

Smart clothes are regular pieces, like shirts and pants, outfitted with technology that monitors functions like heart rate, pace, and distance. Smart clothes aren’t as popular as other wearables like wristbands, but maybe 2017 will be the industry’s year.

6. Batteries

In a year of exploding batteries (hint: Samsung), the simple battery may not be so simple anymore. With the continued reliance on some of these new technologies, too, batteries are in need of extended lives and better cooling mechanisms. Expect retailers to push battery safety and longevity in 2017.

7. Virtual Realities

New gaming headsets and systems have brought VR out of its shaky start. Will 2017 lead what is a pretty cool trend to meet its potential?

8. Screen Tech

With Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) screens, our smartphones should get thinner and more battery-efficient. This trend is only natural, as our screens have to get better to make VR even more enticing to consumers.

We’re celebrating our 30th year in business at TTI, so we’ve seen a lot of technology trends come and go. Throughout that time, we’ve always encouraged our team to remain plugged into the tech industry, because we know it’s important to stay aware of what the future holds — after all, you don’t want to get left behind. Plus, let’s face it: it’s fun! Who doesn’t want to have their favorite sci-fi gadgets in real life?
