Franchising When You’re a Mom

Mother may as well be a job title.

Think about it: moms are basically entrepreneurs. You manage the household, often including everything from finances to every family member’s schedule, not to mention, making sure everyone is happy and healthy, too.

Sometimes, on top of all of that, you have to also balance time between home and work life. And let’s face it; maintaining your career while raising a family is a challenge on its own. The truth of the matter is that Corporate America just doesn’t offer the flexibility to “have it all.” Not to worry, though; there’s a silver lining.

You’re Already a Boss

Did you know your “job duties” as a mother have actually prepared you for a career as an entrepreneur? Franchising can afford you the opportunity to have a flexible schedule, the ability to work from home and spend more time with your family. You can be your own boss not just at home but in business, too.

Dream Vacations franchisee, Liz Dominguez, says she turned to franchising so she could focus on growing her family, “The flexibility for me to work a job I can be proud of AND be at home to raise my son is absolutely priceless to me.”

How Does Franchising Work?

Franchisors give you access to their business model, including the rights to their brand, strategies, support systems, marketing materials and more. It makes the idea of starting a business less overwhelming because you’re using a proven concept, under the guidance of a team and a system designed to support your progress every step of the way.

When people think of franchising, their minds often jump to big brands like McDonald’s, Gold’s Gym or Great Clips, all of which require an investment of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars (and sometimes millions). But there are so many franchise opportunities perfect for moms, including low-cost or home-based options.

Here’s a list of mom-approved franchise industries to consider:

  • Health
  • Fitness
  • Tax Preparation
  • Financial Services
  • Education
  • Professional Services
  • Child-Related

Motherly Advice from Us to You

Starting a business is as tough as motherhood; it’s frustrating, time-consuming, and takes diligent, hard work. And when you have a family to feed, you can’t afford to take any chances. Make sure to do the necessary research to find the right franchise opportunity that fits you and your family.

Surround yourself with people you can trust and rely on throughout your franchise journey. Seek franchisors who offer a comprehensive and ongoing support system. That means having a strong franchise management team, too. And check each franchise opportunity with the Federal Trade Commission to ensure it’s a trustworthy business.
