Why Entrepreneurs Deserve a Week to Themselves

Maybe all you entrepreneurs of the world have been too caught up in checking off your end-of-the-year to-do lists, or have been too busy burning the midnight oil every night in the office in preparation for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but we are currently in the midst of National Entrepreneurship Week! From November 14th-20th, with the additional Global Entrepreneurship Week running from November 18th-24th, it’s easy for a lot of entrepreneurs to be completely unaware that this week is our week! That now is the time for everybody to celebrate what we’ve done as small business owners. Don’t be shy; pat yourself on the back, and enjoy yourself—you’ve earned and deserve this special week for the following reasons!

The risk involved

Something that non-entrepreneurs often neglect to think about is that starting up your own business involves a great deal of risk, especially if you are a first-time entrepreneur. Leaving any stable job behind is always a gamble, especially when it’s consistent on a daily basis with the same duties, hours, and paycheck in place. Running your own business can vary from week to week, even day to day. No new entrepreneur can ever be truly certain that their venture will work out, and that can be especially scary for someone with a family to take care of. But one of the best ways to protect yourself early on, should anything go awry, is to form an LLC or corporation for your business. If you neglect to incorporate your business, you could lose a great deal of your personal assets if things don’t work out financially.

The incredible balancing act

Unlike the typical office employee who usually has the ability to leave his/her work at the office at the end of the day and end of the week, a small business owner’s company never truly leaves his/her mind. Personal life and work life often become one and the same when running a business. This derives from the fact that business owners typically start a business in an industry they love and feel passionately about. So it comes natural to want to incorporate a hobby (your now business) into your personal life. Entrepreneurs are lucky enough to have the gift of freedom when it comes to putting together their work schedule, though that doesn’t mean they get to work any less—they just have to be more creative about when and how they do their work.

As a mother of two boys and the owner of a business, sometimes I have to get creative when figuring out my weekly schedules in order to hit every soccer game, partner meeting, and presentation. It involves some odd hours at the office at times, but I always get done the work that needs to get done, and I haven’t missed a game yet!

The “keep-going” attitude

Because owning a business is so unpredictable, and you never know what will happen when you wake up in the morning, I applaud all of the entrepreneurs out there for just keeping on keeping on. You are all truly making the most of each day by running a business in something you love. You’re brave, resilient, and you help keep the American dream alive and well!
