What Does the CEO of the Future Look Like?

What do you think of when you picture the CEO of any company in your mind? I’ll bet it’s a stuffy-looking older man in a business suit, holding a leather briefcase and jabbering on a cell phone. A quick Google image search of the term ‘CEO’ proves my hypothesis.

Now what kind of qualities does this CEO possess? You’ll probably think that he (or maybe she) is confident, smart, and competent, and probably also rich and perhaps a bit self-absorbed. Painting a less than rosy picture of the traditional CEO? Maybe. But I’ll bet you don’t disagree!

So what should a CEO look like now, and in 25 years? With all kinds of new businesses popping up and new marketing outlets available every day, people who run companies have to be constantly evolving and changing. The idea of a ‘new’ breed of CEO is really interesting to me. Here are a few skills that the CEO of the future will need to have:

The Ability to Bring People Together

More and more, people from across department lines are needing to work together to make the customer experience the best it can be. The CEO of the future will likely need to know how to run a company that doesn’t have distinctive departments. Everyone will need to know and do a little bit of everything to ensure success.

Understand ALL of the Lines of Communication

In the past few decades, the ways that people communicate with other people and businesses have expanded exponentially. We can only expect this trend to continue in the future. The CEO that works 25 years from now will need to be the best of communicators in all ways.

Know How to Allocate Resources Appropriately

You would think that the CEOs of today would know how to use their resources well. But time and time again, we have been shown that companies blow it when it comes to using, well, anything wisely. Companies will have to be more aware of where their money is going in order to be more successful.

I think that these tips apply to small business owners and CEOs just as much as they do to those of Fortune 500 companies. We can all benefit from implementing these ideas now and not waiting for 25 years in the future!
